Yeah I guess it's been a while since I read it, this thread has been going on for a while. Maybe it's just me and I'm very unmechanical compared to most of you and definitely lazy but if your going to put an LT seat, Commander pipes saddle bags, top case etc. maybe just trade for an LT or Commander in the first place?

Maybe, but personally I don't like the look of either, have never been able to NOT see the frame extension from tank to triple T's and the front end is too HD for me.

well mate, ive heard your views on the LT over time and ever man to himself......When I first laid eyes on the Thunderbird, 2010, I thought what an ugly looking bike, and it took 12 mths before I laid out the money....The ugly looking radiator, spew,, and the front sprocket cover,, spew, and I couldn't get my head around the engine configuration, too big and bulky,,, but I bought one and am now the owner of an LT with 20.000 ks on ...In my opinion it far surpasses the comfort of the original, the suspension is vastly superior, I can have it set on 3 and it does everything I want two up or solo...So what if there is a gap at the front, the bike has all the other vayiables on it that puts it in the yuck stakes, but I like it..Besides , the gap at the front could house an air bag that I'm working on

Hey Greg, it's personal choice mate, not an attack on those who own one, same reason I buy the cars I do, I have to like the look before I shell out my $$$$.

Yeah I looked at the pics and even in person and I thought the same thing. What's up w that ugly gap between the frame and tank. I looked at my Commander a year and a half in the showroom before I bought it. Also I wasn't keen on the dual headlights, I know some folks like them. But you know after I rode it home I never thought about the gap and lights again. So much positive I didn't care. They let me use my 2010 bird trade as a loaner when I did the 500 mile service and I couldn't believe the difference in ride and feel. The longer frame really makes a difference for a smoother ride.

When Triumph debuted the Commander... the Forum was a buzz debating over the longneck! One idea was to accommodate a new Triumph fairing (never happened). Anyway Commander's long wheelbase and better seat offers a smooth ride. But compared to a modified early Bird (aftermarket suspension and seat), comfort is a toss up imo. And the early bike design is more for sport with a shorter wheelbase.

I like both bikes though prefer sporty (twisties too ;)

Funny that you should mention that. I had a panel shop ( auto car repair and paint) for twenty years, used to specialise in BMW's, and I was pedantic about a few things, one of those was gaps!!
